The awards keep coming in for Learn To Ride, the program that helps the whole family ride to a healthier lifestyle on their bikes!
Learn To Ride has won an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties, and will be recognized at the NACo Achievement Awards Luncheon in Nasheville, Tennessee, on July 15.
“The recognition is great,” said Ben Cooley, Learn To Ride co-founder and owner of Bicycle Sport. “This is really a celebration of the partnership with Park and Rec, what that’s meant to the program so far, and what it says for the future of cycling in Charlotte.”
Co-founder Dick Winters, who is the Built Environment and Safe Routes to School coordinator for the Mecklenburg County Health Department, says, “It’s terrific news!” Winters adds that a strong partnership with the county’s Park and Recreation Department is one reason for Learn To Ride’s success. “It’s really been fun helping Park and Recreation get into the bike initiative.”
Since 2013, thousands of kids and adults have learned to balance and pedal bikes using Learn To Ride’s proven “balance bike” method at events around Mecklenburg County.
The NACo Achievement Award adds to Learn To Ride’s impressive list of awards earned in the last two years:
- “Best Kids Cycling Event” in North Carolina for 2016 by Endurance Magazine
- nominated for a 2017 & 2018 Sustain Charlotte Award for Transportation
- Co-founder Dick Winters named 2017 winner of the Joe Cogdell Volunteer Service Award from Partners for Parks
