Learn to Ride on Charlotte Today!
LTR co-founder Dick Winters and Park & Rec’s Al Bangoura paid a visit to Charlotte Today this week!
Learn to Ride 2018 Schedule
Hundreds more children and adults will get the opportunity to learn an important life skill in 2018, as the award-winning Learn to Ride program announces its schedule for the new year!
Five new events will help riders of all ages kick their training wheels and roll to a healthier lifestyle using Learn to Ride’s proven “balance bike” method. More than 500 kids and adults learned to balance and pedal bikes at events around Mecklenburg County in 2017, and Learn to Ride is excited to bring their program to these places in the new year:
- January 20th Arbor Glen Recreation Center
- March 17th Winget Recreation Center
- May 12th Arbor Glen Recreation Center
- August 18th Wallace Pruitt Recreation Center
- October 27th MLK Middle School
“Learn to Ride” was named “Best Kids Cycling Event” in North Carolina for 2016 by Endurance Magazine, and was nominated for a 2017 Sustain Charlotte Award for Transportation.
Co-founder Dick Winters was also recently named winner of the Joe Cogdell Volunteer Service Award from Partners for Parks, for his advocacy of bicycling programs in Charlotte — especially programs for children, like Learn to Ride.

Learn to Ride Nominated for a 2017 Sustain Charlotte Award
Wow! We’re in some pretty good company here! Learn to Ride is on the list of incredible people and programs doing great things here in Charlotte. We’ve been nominated for a 2017 Sustain Charlotte Award in the Transportation category. You bet it’s an honor to be recognized for the effort, but none of it could happen without the friends and volunteers who make Learn to Ride what it is: an opportunity for the kids, parents, and other folks who kick those training wheels for good and learn to ride a bike. Thank you, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, Public Health, Bicycle Sport, Trips for Kids – Recyclery, well-run media + marketing, Unknown Bike and Brew, Crank Mafia, Slippery Sasquatch Racing, Jeff Viscount and Weekly Rides, and so many more of you who keep this program rolling!
